Differences Between WordPress.com And WordPress.org
Due to huge features, amazing
plug-ins and flexibility, people are going for WordPress. WordPress, a content
management system (CMS) based on PHP and MySQL, is the most popular blogging system in use on the Web,
at more than 60 million websites. But there are confusion among some people regarding WordPress.com
and WordPress.org. Some questions are very common:
-
What are the differences between them?
-
What are the advantages and disadvantages of WordPress.com and WordPress.org?
-
Which one is better for me?
WordPress.com
Advantages
#1 Very Easy:
WordPress.com is very easy to use. You can sign up for free through your email
account. The whole set-up process is quick and understandable.
#2 Free
Hosting: WordPress.com provides free hosting and you don’t need to
worry about paying for hosting. A free WordPress.com offers 3 GB free storage
for posts and media.
#3
Customization: You have an access to hundreds of non-premium themes,
many of which can be customized further. You have more freedom to customize the
look of your new WordPress.com blog than that of Blogger.com. However,
WordPress.com permits only the basic customization.
Disadvantages
#1 Unprofessional
Domain Name: Your free domain name format won’t look like professional.
For example -
yourdomain.wordpress.com
your-domain.wordpress.com
yourdomain777.wordpress.com
#2 Limited
Monetization: WordPress.com is strict on monetization. Most common
revenue strategies for example Google AdSense or affiliate marketing are not
allowed, although you can promote your own products. To keep it free,
WordPress.com sometimes runs advertisements on your free blog. But you can
remove these advertisements with the purchase of a No Ads upgrade or a Bundle!
#3 Restrictions On
Plugins: You will be stuck with what WordPress.com gives you unless you
pay for some money. If you don’t, you are not allowed to install any plugin to
extend the functionality of your blog.
WordPress.org
Advantages
#1 Freedom:
You can install more themes and/or more plugins to make your WordPress blog/site
completely unique and professional. WordPress.org is where thousands of
plugins is freely available to bloggers. Moreover, you can modify the core PHP,
add fancy jQuery elements. However, a good number of premium plugins can be
purchased separately.
#2
Monetization: Using WordPress.org, you can put all the ads and
monetization tools on your site.
#3 Domain
Name: WordPress.org gives you the opportunity to choose your own domain
name (yourdomain.com) but you have to host with whichever company you
like.
Disadvantages
#1 Costly: You
need to invest in domain name which costs around $10 per year. You can buy it
from Namecheap, Godaddy etc.
Furthermore, Web hosting is not free.
You will also need hosting which costs around $120 per year. To save costs, you
could buy your hosting from the same company where you purchase your domain name
or other web hosting companies like HostGator, Dreamhost etc.
#2
Customization: It can be difficult for beginners to customize theme and
coding.
Your Choice?
What you will choose one over other
depends on your interests, demand and your job. If you only want to share your
thoughts, images, and connect with others (I mean a personal blog, a hobby or
like these), you should use WordPress.com. On the other side, if you want
a custom website/blog on business or money making, you should have total control
over your site (hosting, advertising, branding and more) then you will need to
use WordPress.org.
However, you may consider
WordPress.com as a training ground for WordPress.org and you can migrate to
WordPress.org at any time.
